(This is an announcement of an upcoming workshop on Japanese language and culture. English text follows the Japanese).

せっかく京都にいるのに、教科書で文型の練習をするだけなんてもったいない！　海外から来た方々にこそ、アートや音楽、建築、マンガ、料理など、日本で「一番知りたかったこと」を味わってほしいし、新鮮な視点を受けて、リアルに語り合いたい――そんな想いから、日本語を習得しつつ、日本のカルチャー・シーンやアートについて、一歩踏み込んで学び、また話し合うというこのワークショップが生まれました。

講師（ファシリテーター）は、『英語で日本文化の本 The Japan Culture Book』（2015年／ジャパンタイムズ・刊）という著作があるノンフィクションライター・三浦史子。日本語教育能力検定も取得していて、各カルチャー・ジャンルで使われている日本語の用語や、その実情と背景について解説します。また、世界のさまざまな場所から来た参加者の間で意見交換して、クリエイティブな時間を作り出していきましょう。

• 企画の内容

本ワークショップでは、「文化は常に変化し続けるもの」という認識を前提にして、「ステレオタイプと多様性」を切り口に、１回１テーマで展開します。おもに日本語で進行。適宜、英語を交えます。

第1回：「本好きの集い」

記念すべきシリーズ第一回のテーマは「本」。ウェブメディア全盛の時代にあって、紙の「本」は新たな存在感をはなっています。オビってなに？　新刊の値段はまけられないの？　マンガが多い！　エッセイってessayと違うの？　翻訳文学ってなに？――本好きだけれど、日本の書店に並ぶ本をながめて、首をかしげている方々、大いに語り合いましょう。編集者＆ノンフィクションライターとして、数々の本の出版に携わってきた三浦史子が、講師（ファシリテーター）をつとめます。

・対象

母語が日本語以外で、カルチャー関連の用語知識や情報を増やしたい方、会話力を高めたい方。日本語レベルは中～上級を想定していますが、集まった方々によって、ある程度調整します。講師の日本語をその場で全部聞き取れなくてもいいので、内容に興味のある方のご参加をお待ちしています。

・講師（ファシリテーター）紹介

三浦史子（みうらふみこ）

山口県生まれ。芸術、デザインの理論と実践を学んだ学生時代から、カメラを手に世界各地に旅する。商業建築のインテリア企画設計職、文化・芸術関連書籍/雑誌の編集者、国際ジャーナリストのリサーチ・スタッフ等を経ながら、フリーランスで雑誌に記事と写真を発表する。アーティストや科学者、宇宙飛行士等、これまで数百人にインタビュー。また、テーマとして「文化の移動」に興味をもち、ハワイイの日系移民文化についての取材も。著書に、ルポ『フェア・トレードを探しに FAIR TRADE TRAIL』(2008年/スリーエーネットワーク)、和英対訳の語学書兼カルチャー・ガイド『英語で日本文化の本 The Japan Culture Book』（2015年、ジャパンタイムズ・刊）がある。

Workshop for People Learning Japanese as a Second Language/“Culture in Japanese” series 1—Book Lovers’ Gathering

If you are in Kyoto, you would surely like to savor Japanese art, architecture, manga, cuisine, and “what you would have wanted to see the most in Japan” before coming to the country, instead of simply practicing your Japanese through a textbook. It should also be a great opportunity to exchange fresh views with people from around the world on the culture scene in Japan. In acknowledgment of these wishes, this workshop series aims to help you submerge yourself one level deeper into the study of Japanese arts and culture, as well as practice your Japanese language skills.

The facilitator of the workshop is nonfiction writer Miura Fumiko, whose books include The Japan Culture Book, published by The Japan Times in 2015. Fumiko, who passed the Japanese Language Teaching Competency Test, explains phraseologies for each cultural genre, as well as its status and background. The participants will also discuss the points raised by fellow participants as well as the facilitator, sharing an enjoyable time to inspire one another.

• Event Information

This workshop explores the concept that “culture never stops changing,” focusing on “stereotypes and diversity,” setting one theme for each session. It is held mostly in Japanese, with some English explanations added.

First session: “Book Lovers’ Meeting”

The theme of the premier session is “books.” In this web-media heyday, paper books exude renewed presence. What is obi for? Don’t they ever discount new publication? So many manga are on stands! Are essei and essay different? What is translation literature? If you are a book lover, yet tilting your head in confusion at bookstores in Japan, then this interactive workshop will be a worthwhile experience for you. Miura Fumiko, hosting the event, has engaged in a number of publications as an editor and nonfiction writer.

Potential participants:

Non-native speakers of Japanese who want to increase their Japanese vocabulary, knowledge, and information about arts and culture in Japan, and to be able to hold art- and culture-related Japanese conversations. Participants’ Japanese language level is intended to be intermediate to advanced. You do not need to understand all of the instructor’s words. If you are interested in the topics, please join us!

Profile of Instructor/Facilitator:

Miura Fumiko was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. While studying the theory and practice of art and design at university in Tokyo, she began traveling to various parts of the world, and later spent a year in London. In Japan she has worked as a commercial building interior designer, a book and magazine editor on culture and the arts, a researcher for overseas journalists on international issues, as well as a nonfiction writer and photographer. She has interviewed hundreds of people, ranging from artists to scientists to astronauts. Her interest in the migration of cultures has inspired her to study such phenomena as the Japanese immigrant culture of Hawaii. Among her publications is the book Fair Trade Trail (3A Corporation, 2008), an inquiry into the fair trade movement around the globe.
